I’m James Sullivan and I’ll be 80 years old in June 2026. I recently became aware of the fact, or finally accepted the fact, that going forward I will be living “a limited life”. It is mostly due to the “aging” process and how it affects my body and mind, but there are other factors as well, financial, living arrangement, etc.
My health status:
As I said, I’m almost 80 years old. I have a stent in my heart from 1998, and I monitor my blood pressure/heartbeat ( I take metoprolol ).
I had a kidney transplant 13 years ago ( I take immuno-suppressive drugs to ward off rejection, one of which makes me susceptible to squamous cell carcinoma skin cancer ). I have atrial fibrillation ( I take coumadin ), central sleep apnea ( I sleep with an AVS machine ), an atonic bladder ( I self-cath 3-4 times a day ), morton’s neuroma in my feet, curvature of the spine, lower back pain and stiffness from arthritis, and the most aggravating of all, fecal leakage.
Where I live:
I live in a 55+ community in Easthampton MA. My 1 BR apartment’s amenities are great for seniors. All on one floor, central air, washer/dryer combo, two porches, and soon to undergo a major upgrade for energy efficiency.
My financial status:
I didn’t have a life-long career so I have no IRA’s, pensions, investments, real estate ownership, etc. so I have a very modest Social Security income, and consequently, I qualify for a Section 8 housing voucher, SNAP benefits and fuel assistance.
I drive an EV. The lease payments are my one extravagance in my budget.
